What happened to Laguna Quays?
In 1992, the Laguna Quays resort opened as a luxury resort. However, in 1995, the resort went bankrupt owing around $200 million. By 2009, the Mackay Regional Council was owed over $2 million for rates. It auctioned parts of the precinct to attempt to recover the money.
Is Laguna Quays Golf course still open?
Despite the big plans, Laguna Quays has never reopened and remains largely abandoned. The once pristine fairways and greens are riddled with weeds (see above photo, taken November 2020). The bunkers no longer exist and the paths connecting greens with tees, cutting through tracts of rainforest, have become overgrown.
Who developed Laguna Quays?
Some 500 kilometres north of there, near Proserpine, lies another such project, Laguna Quays, built in the late 1980s, by Japanese trucking conglomerate Kumagai Gumi at a cost of some $250 million.

Brampton Island, once a tourist hot spot, remains closed. Brampton Island, off the coast of Mackay, was bought by United Petroleum in 2010 for $5.9 million and promptly closed within a year. The company intended to build a seven-star resort there, but it never eventuated.
Is South Molle Island resort Open?
The island resort is currently closed but was purchased in late 2016 by a Chinese Investment Group that intend to redevelop the resort and its facilities. No timeline has been given as yet but many are hopeful that in years to come the resort will be able to welcome guests back again to share in this islands charms.
Can you stay on Lindeman Island?
For further exploration you can spend the day visiting uninhabited islands nearby Lindeman just a short boat ride away. Currently, the only accommodation facilities available are camping because of the closure of the resort.

The One & Only on Hayman Island experienced crushing damage during Cyclone Debbie, so the resort is closed for renovations and repairs until 2018—devastating to us, as its’ otherworldly sunsets and unfettered access to the Great Barrier Reef make it one of our favorite destinations anywhere.

Can you do a day trip to Hayman Island?
Hayman Island has a number of tours and attractions. You can visit the other islands for a day or you can take a cruise to the outer Great barrier Reef. This runs every day and is operated by Cruise Whitsundays to a permanent platform they have anchored right on the reef itself.
Is Daydream Island owned by the Chinese?
Daydream Island was sold to China Capital Investment Group in 2015 for $30 million and two years later was all but destroyed by Cyclone Debbie. Closed for two years, the resort was rebuilt and reopened in 2019 at a cost of $140 million.
