How long should table saw sled runners be?
A hardwood runner should be about 2/3rds the depth of your miter slots. I usually make mine a little more than 1/4”, and my miter slots are 3/8” deep. So I would start by cutting several 1/4″ strips from 3/4″ stock. These strips will later be laid on their side and trimmed down to fit my 3/4″ miter slots.

Can you make a table saw sled out of MDF?
I made my sled with 1/2″ Baltic Birch and then screwed down 1/2″ MDF over the top (dual runner). Makes perfect zero clearance and when the kerf in the MDF is no longer zero clearance I can remove it and screw a new piece down. Don’t have any humidity issues but if you do in your area just put a coat of shellac on it.
How big should my table saw sled be?
