What is NSF REU?
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is a Foundation-wide program that supports active participation in science, engineering, and education research by undergraduate students.
Is NSF REU prestigious?
NSF-REUs are extremely competitive and ‘prestigious’. They are normally research positions that are fully-funded, more on the money later, which last 6-10 weeks during the summer. During my undergraduate, I was able to attend 3 different REU programs all over the country.
What is an REU position?
An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose.
How competitive are REU programs?
REU programs are an excellent opportunity for students to explore their research interests and gain valuable research experience. REU programs are very competitive pick between 10 – 15 programs to apply to, most have a similar application with no application fee.
How do I submit my NSF REU supplement?
Students do not apply to NSF to participate in REU activities. Students apply directly to REU Sites or to NSF-funded investigators who receive REU Supplements. Most REU application deadlines are in February, but it’s important to start early and not wait until the last minute. Winter break is a good time to work on applications, but most applications should be up by November and it never hurts to start thinking about them earlier.
