What is a full ENT examination?
A complete ENT examination includes inspection of the face, ears, nose, throat and neck. We generally screen for hearing loss and we use pressure testing to examine the eardrum for fluid (pneumatic otoscopy or tympanometry).
How do you perform an ENT exam?
Inspection
- Examine the mouth and note the condition of the tongue.
- Examine back of tongue and tonsils (press down on the tongue with a tongue depressor).
- Palpate the base of the tongue (look for tumours that may not be easily visible).
- Inspect the uvula and soft palate.
What does an ENT doctor check for?
An ENT doctor looks at your ears, nose, throat, sinuses, larynx, and other related parts of your body. Otolaryngologists are doctors who go through a rigorous course of specialty training after earning a medical degree.
How is the normal ear exam charted?
Documenting a normal exam of the head, eyes, ears, nose and throat should look something along the lines of the following:
- Head – The head is normocephalic and atraumatic without tenderness, visible or palpable masses, depressions, or scarring.
- Eyes – Visual acuity is intact.
Can an ENT see the inner ear?
An ENT specialist can perform tests to check your balance and diagnose inner ear problems such as Meniere’s disease. The doctor will also be able to check for more serious issues, such as tumours that could be affecting your sense of balance.

What can I expect at my ENT appointment?
Depending on the reason for the visit, the ENT will perform a physical and visual examination. This may include looking in your ears, your nose and your throat. Your neck, throat, cheekbones and other areas of your face and head may be palpitated.
How does ENT check your nose?
Nasal endoscopy is a procedure to look at the nasal and sinus passages. It’s done with an endoscope. This is a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and a light. An ear, nose, and throat doctor (otolaryngologist) will often do this procedure in his or her office.

Otoscopy is a clinical procedure used to examine structures of the ear, particularly the external auditory canal, tympanic membrane, and middle ear. While performing the otoscopic examination, the provider holds the handle of the otoscope and inserts the cone of the otoscope into the patient’s external auditory canal.
