Is first direct part of Faster Payments?
We make all payments and decisions about payments on working days. A working day is usually Monday to Friday (except public holidays) but Faster Payments can be made at any time.. The first direct Exchange Rate is used when we convert a payment into another currency for you.
How long do first direct transfers take?
We’d be sad to see you go but we understand these things happen so we’ll send a list of your Direct Debits and Standing Orders to your new account provider as quick as we can, normally within 5 working days. We’ll then work with them to transfer and close your account if you want to.

It is now possible to send individual payments of up to £250,000 using the Faster Payments Service, but those organisations offering the service can set their own limits depending on how the payment is sent and the type of account their customer is sending from.

These are electronic payments that can be made online, over the phone, in a branch or using our self-service machines. As long as the receiving bank or building society uses Faster Payments too, the payment will arrive almost immediately (though sometimes, it can take up to 2 hours).

Normally, a Faster Payment arrives within minutes, although sometimes they can take up to two hours. A Faster Payment will always be credited by the end of the following business day, assuming you’re making the payment to another bank or building society that’s also a member of the Faster Payments scheme.
