Why are frames lugged?
What does a lug do? It strengthens the joint by adding material to the stressed areas, and distributes the stresses over a large area. And it adds an artistic element to the frame joint. And it allows tubes to be joined by brazing, rather than welding.
What is lugs on road bike?
A lug is a jacket, sleeve or fitting that joins two tubes together — think of PVC pipe fittings. Lugs can be found on almost any type of frame material including carbon. Carbon-fiber lugs.
What is a Lugless frame?
Welded frames fall into two basic categories. Sif bronze fillet brazed or electronic flash pressure weld. I never did like the term welded and much prefer the term “Lugless”. Over here Raleigh made a welded frame back in 1924 which was of lugless construction and was acetylene welded.
What is fillet brazing?
Fillet brazing is a technique to join steel bicycle tubes that relies on a so-called filler metal. And you’ll learn the principle by which fillet-brazed joints are created on a steel frame. True aficionados of handmade steel road bikes love fillet-brazing.
Are lugged frames better?
In most lugged steel frames, the lugs have a simple pointed shape. Lugs also reinforce the joints, often resulting in a stronger frame, this gives lugged frames in particular an advantage for touring cyclists.
Are lugs stronger than welds?
Frames built with silver soldered lugs will last longer than those that are fillet brazed and considerably longer than those that are welded. However, for most of our customers, the real practical difference is that lugged frames hold up in crashes better, and when it becomes necessary, they are much easier to repair.
How are bike frames joined?
A filler metal (like brass or silver) is heated just above its melting point and distributed over two adjacent tubes. As the filler metal cools it hardens and forms a joint connecting the metals. Brazing uses a filler metal with a melting temperature lower than the frame material.
What is Lugwork?
: any of a genus (Arenicola) of marine polychaete worms that have a row of tufted gills along each side of the back and are used for bait.
Is brazing steel as strong as welding?
A properly made brazed joint (like a welded joint) will in many cases be as strong or stronger than the metals being joined. If you don’t have to melt the base metals to join them, it doesn’t matter if they have widely different melting points. You can braze steel to copper as easily as steel to steel.
