Do you get emergency credit on smart meters?
If you’ve got a smart Pay As You Go meter, you can start using your emergency credit quickly and easily through your In-Home Display, or your Smart Energy Tracker if you have one of these. You can also activate emergency credit directly on the smart meter(s).
Are smart meters still free?
You won’t have to pay upfront to have a smart meter installed – smart meters will be paid for through everyone’s energy bills, just as old-style meters are.

The meter will not cut off until 9am the next morning, unless it is a Sunday or an English Bank Holiday where Friendly Emergency Credit will cover you for the full day. Please note any friendly emergency credit used will need to be repaid when you next top up, so we can start supplying you with energy again.

How to use emergency credit on your Pay As You Go gas meter
- Insert your gas card into your meter.
- You’ll then have the option to use the emergency credit. Accept it by pressing the red button ‘A’.
- You’ll need to top up to return to normal use. Press the red button ‘A’ once to see how much you owe.
