Is VCF toxic?
This medicine may cause harm if swallowed. If VCF Vaginal Contraceptive (nonoxynol 9 film) is swallowed, call a doctor or poison control center right away. If you are pregnant or you get pregnant while taking VCF Vaginal Contraceptive (nonoxynol 9 film), call your doctor right away.
Can you use VCF film while on your period?
Cervical caps and diaphragms are not recommended for use during your menstrual period because of an increased chance of developing toxic shock syndrome. Your doctor may advise you to use condoms with a spermicide instead during your menstrual periods when protection is needed.
How long does spermicide last in the body?
One dose of spermicide usually lasts 1 hour. For repeated sex, use additional spermicide. After sex, the spermicide has to remain in place for 6-8 hours to make sure the sperm are killed.
How long does VCF gel last?
A new film must be used each time you have intercourse. Once inserted, it will provide protection from pregnancy for up to three hours. VCF has a shelf life of five years.
What is the most effective spermicide?
The most effective strength spermicide contains at least 100 mg of nonoxynol-9 per dose. You are more likely to get pregnant if you use a weaker spermicide. There is no difference in effectiveness between various spermicide types, such as gel, film, or suppository.
How effective is VCF?
VCF is 94% effective. This means that if 100 people used VCF correctly for one year, only 6 people would get pregnant. Because VCF may be used incorrectly, it is closer to 72% effective with typical use. If you use VCF incorrectly, your risk of pregnancy increases.
Do you have to wash out spermicide?
When using a spermicide, douching within 6 to 8 hours after the last sexual intercourse (even with just water) may stop the spermicide from working properly. Also, washing or rinsing the vaginal or rectal area may wash the spermicide away before it has had time to work properly.
How long are spermicides effective after being put in the vagina?
Most must be placed in the vagina at least 10 to 15 minutes before sex so they have enough time to dissolve and spread. Many forms of spermicides are effective for only 1 hour after they are inserted.
Is VCF gel effective immediately?
Insert one applicatorful into the vagina prior to intercourse (see complete, illustrated directions on package insert). Each applicatorful is effective immediately and up to one hour after application. An additional applicatorful is required prior to each act of intercourse, regardless of time since last application.
